Here to heal your garden

Welcome to your Healing Gardens, in Tunbridge Wells, with some suggestions on how I can make your special piece of the Earth even more enjoyable and restful for you.

Spring is getting closer - it's official!

Five cuckoos are being tracked with GPS tags on the British Trust for Ornithology website, and have now all reached Ghana from their winter residence in the Congo.

There are some wonderful maps on which you can see their individual routes to the Congo last year (and now their journey now back)

En route last year....

Chris - chose to fly east of Perugia
Kasper - chose east of Arezzo
Martin - flew over Grosetto
Lyster flew over France,
As did Clement (perhaps he saw Clement Ferrand on the map?)

It is a seasonal suggestions list.

I have found that one of the keys to a good, considered garden (which should never look designed), is for the gardener, me, to use his ears well.

To listen to the ideas - usually not fully formed, and the desires you have, the owners of the garden, for your piece of land.

And to advise and suggest within these ideas and outside these ideas too.

Even a few hurried conversations between us can reap a rich harvest of ideas that can be put into practice.

Research, anyone?

Sensitivity to your unmade garden dreams is very important.

As many of you know, the enjoyable time I spend doing the basic gardening tasks for you, such as weeding, cutting, mowing, give me the chance to get to know your gardens well, and to build up a relationship with you, too, so that a good, exciting plan for your garden develops naturally and at the right pace.

I am also happy to do any research you might require, and my many years of being the Chief Researcher for Dorling Kindersley Books, Children's Division, has given me great expertise in this field, and it is something that I really enjoy.

Gardening those vegies

Although it is always nice to leave a library (cyber or otherwise) for a garden!

As many of you know, I very much enjoy growing vegetables with flowers, and some of you are now enjoying produce from

Small Corners

Within our isle
Are other isles,
Surrounded by the seas,
And in those isles
Our secret isles,
Find peace, beneath old trees.

I know of oak trees, tall and proud,
With ivy, overgrown,
Where leaves from many autumns lie,
Within blackbirds' hidden homes.

Within our isle
Are other isles,
Surrounded by the seas,
And in these isles,
Our secret isles,
Find peace, beneath old trees.

I know of brambles looped like leaps,
Beside long-mellow'd walls,
Where spiders hang and milkmaids sang,
Of carriages, and balls.

Within our isle
Are other isles,
Surrounded by the seas,
And in these isles,
Our secret isles,
Find peace, beneath old trees.

I know of places that exist
In memories alone,
And memories that still live on,
In places overgrown.

Within our isle,
Are other isles,
Surrounded by the seas,
And in these isles,
Our secret isles,
Find peace, by vanished trees. - Robert

your own low maintenance vegetables each year - your own harvest festivals, to help ground you after a tough city day, perhaps.

It seems strange that seeds are either called Flower Seeds or Vegetable Seeds when a vegetable usually offers both and something to eat as well.

Some of the colours of these vegetables can be quite stunning. A whole world of colours and shapes are available for you to enjoy.

The nutritional aspect of your own organic produce are beneficial for all of you too. All details of my vegetable gardening services are to be found in the virtual allotment section.

Perhaps your Virtual Allotment can bring you some pleasure as you sit at your desk. Join me in the fields when you can't feel the weather.

Friends met in your garden

I have met some terribly interesting friends in your gardens, and these poems celebrate these interesting characters; meetings take place every gardening day!

So I hope you enjoy taking advantage of these services, it will be a pleasure to do the work for you at, as most of you know, very reasonable rates.

Wishing you contented and healing times on your piece of the Earth.

Best wishes

Busker on the tube

On the mechanical way, to the mechanical day,
Wearing jeans, disappeared at both knees,
You sing for a song, and then smiling, you're gone,
With small handfuls of 'Thank-You' and 'Please.'

You're loved and you're hated and society bated,
For reminding us all of shelved dreams,
And revenge is the fine, and that neat scissored line,
You can see on our smart weekend jeans.

Robert's song for September

Suggested Location for Planting of Foxtail Lilies, Simonicchi
Starry sentinels of Simonicchi,
Dusk bright, upright,
A consolation of constellations,
Shooting stars towards the sky,
Not so far away.

Becoming midnight centurions,
Misty and milky
Wrapped in night cloaks,
Guarding nearby dream of peace,
Still,
Stars,
Of Simonicchi.

A poem about the last, quiet refuges of our island - these in Tunbridge Wells, but they could be anywhere, and are, I hope.
